“The Apothecary’s Assistant – or – Witch Austen’s Revenge” by subtilior

Gioia’s Rec:

You know that feeling you get when you stumble upon an amazing story, and you wonder how in the name of all that is holy you never saw this before, because it is so completely and utterly and obviously written by someone who knows your tastes precisely?  That’s what this story was for me.  Pride & Prejudice meets Harry Potter with a touch of Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair thrown in for good measure.  All three are books I love, for extremely different reasons.  Those specific reasons are all brought to play in this multi-fandom crossover.

The story was sometimes confusing but never boring, and everything made perfect sense in the end.  And what an ending it was!  I was completely thrown for a loop.  This story is written by an author who knows Jane Austen and J.K. Rowling’s characters so very well, that she was able to take them places which, though their authors would never have written such a scenario, felt completely natural and utterly logical. Of course this is how Hermione would act or what she would say, I found myself thinking on multiple occasions.  Of course she and Snape would be these particularly characters in P&P - and not Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, as I initially assumed.  It all worked so beautifully that I’m only disappointed there wasn’t a sequel.  The ending was sheer brilliance, and I’m dying to crawl into this fanfiction and watch the epilogue play out forever.
